[Rudder & Elevator Hinges]
Fabricating hinges for the empennage control surfaces
Patterns & Fabricating
The hinges are a modified version of the hinges specified in the plans. The original plans called for hinges that required structurally important welds. To bypass the need to make these important welds, a new design was made. These hinges only required drilling, shaping, and bending of metal. They are still made from 1/8" thick, 1/2" wide 4130 steel and use the same hardware called for in the plans.
A pattern was made for the inside and outside hinges from MDF. Layout fluid was used to trace the patterns onto the stock, then a center punch was used to mark the holes to be drilled. Holes were drilled with a small bit, then to 1/4", and finished with a counter sink and deburr.
The pieces were primed with self-etching primer, then finished with two coats of flat black enamel.
